This is a map showing the location of mile markers, surviving or not, within the 19th century boundaries of Berkshire. Some hundreds of milestones or mileposts have survived road improvements, war-time burial or defacement, hedge trimmers, theft and traffic accidents. Long after they served any real purpose they can still be found, with more or less difficulty, in the hedgerows and road verges of today. Many date from the age of stage-coaches and turnpike roads, and all are part of our history. See the full-size map (note this is a large image and may take a second or two to appear).
